Unboxing and Initial Thoughts
It comes in 2 boxes - 1 for the carry case with the light and phone/tablet holder, and 1 for the actual stand itself.
The packaging quality is high, and the sleeves attached to the boxes are well designed and informative.
The Capsule Music Stand
The stand is well-made and durable with a high quality finish. The metal construction gives it a solid, substantial feel, yet it remains easy to carry and hold with one hand.
Following the instructions included I attempted to set it up. It folds open and doubles in length and holds a good amount of tension in the joint in the middle after it opens up.
To open the legs, unlock the mechanism at the bottom of the stand by twisting a quarter turn. You can then pull the legs out and extend them to the fullest. It covers around 2 feet or 60 centimeters.
Then, adjust the height by pulling up whilst holding the joint. Be sure to hold the base at the bottom or simply put some weight on a couple of legs.
After adjusting to the required height, you can then set up the tray by folding the arms open. There is one extendable arm at the top and one at the bottom, whilst the middle one rotates and doesn’t fold.
The top arm can be slid down to the desired height, and you can choose the desired angle by tilting the tray. At this point the stand is set up and ready to use. You can clip in your music book/sheets by using the clear clips on either side of the middle arm which are extendable on both sides.
My opinion is that the stand is easy to set up once you have tried it and remember the steps. Although there are plenty of clear written instructions, the best way is to experiment with the stand carefully or watch a video. All the parts are functional and have a reason to be there, so in that sense setting it up is a fairly straightforward task.
Capsule Music Stand Accessories
If you get the accessories which are the light and the device holder, you will need to attach them. There is a screw hole at the top and also in the middle at the joint which is at the bottom of the tray.
The device holder is of good quality and will do the job, but I wouldn’t say it is exceptional in that any other device holders (that clips to the air vents in your car for example) will suffice if they have a suitable screw.
A good feature is that it can hold a phone or a tablet by expanding as you press both buttons at the same time. The entire holder also screws easily into place either at the top or bottom.
The light is slim and compact as the arms are foldable. Installation is easier than the device holder because of the twisting mechanism provided which means you don’t have to turn the whole unit - instead, just turn the unit.
The unit is powered by AAA batteries or USB-C. There is a battery compartment secured by a small crosshead screw. On the left is the USB-C port, and on the right there are 3 position switches: O is off, I is on, II is also on but brighter. Having the two levels of brightness to choose from is a great feature because dark environments are often outside of the user’s control, therefore the user can select a comfortable brightness.
Please be aware that this unit is not rechargeable and needs a sustainable source of power when using USB-C i.e. a mains socket or a portable charger.
However, given the height of the unit, a portable charger is not the best option as it may dangle and pull weight to one side, making the stand topple. Even if you manage to put it on the arm, it may get in the way of the music book/sheets. Having long wires is undesirable, unless you are able to position yourself close to a mains socket or use an extension cord.
To be fair though, it may actually be preferable not to have the rechargeable option in case it runs out in the middle of a performance. Having both the battery and plug option can be good for when the batteries run out, the plug is a backup.
Final Thoughts
Pros:
Good quality build that will last
Straightforward set up with foldable structure
Functional uses with added accessories
Forward-thinking and innovative design
Unique offering in the market - there aren’t many like this!
Cons:
Light needs constant power source unless using batteries
Sturdiness in the base/legs section can be improved
Weight could be even lighter for convenience when travelling
Summary
Overall the KraftGeek Capsule Music Stand is an exciting and innovative product because of its portability for travelling musicians and versatility in offering a range of functional uses with accessories. Many musicians in this digital age no longer read physical sheet music on paper but rather on phones or tablets, and this is where the device holder clip comes in.
Travelling to lessons, rehearsals, and gigs is also a big part of being a working musician. Although driving to places may seem like the best option, taking public transport such as the bus or train can save time and money due to high parking charges and risk of getting stuck in traffic jams especially in crowded cities.
From what I’ve heard back home in Hong Kong, there are a lot of guitarists who just travel via the underground metro with only their guitar and a pedalboard, often a multi-fx digital one that plugs straight into the PA speakers. Gone are the days of lugging heavy amps!
Music scores are visible due to bright light.
Soft padded carry case with accessories compartments inside.
Compared with traditional music stands where parts are taken apart and assembled, the Capsule Music Stand features a foldable design with no assembly required. While the stand is well-constructed and easy to set up, its weight and reliance on a constant power source for the light may be drawbacks, although given its sleek design I would say it is steady for its weight.
Despite these minor issues, the stand remains a practical and functional addition to a musician’s toolkit, particularly for those who prioritize durability and functionality. It is worth noting that this stand also comes in very handy for content creators at any level from amateur to professional as it can be used as a phone or tablet stand.
Personally I would have liked a round base for added sturdiness, but that would not have been suitable with the compactness of the whole unit. That is perhaps for another venture on Kickstarter?
